Mitja and Viki did it again!!!

I have to say I am really proud to have Mitja mitjablazic  and Viki vksi  as friends. Recent attack on Mitja during Pride week pissed me off to a level I never even knew I have it in me. But later on, offical stuff that followed, gave me some hope that Slovenia isn't a totally fucked up country on its way back to becoming an utterly non-tolerant country. Some good news followed. Police arrested three of the attackers, the guy who organised the attack included (18, 21, and 22 year old punks); gov't is slowly starting to open a discussion about equal rights legislation and another good thing happened today.

Slovenia does not know gay marriage, but gay couples can get registered. Ironically, the bill about same-sex registrations was passed during the rightist gov't here, but just to say that Slovenia does qualify as a proper EU country. When registering became official in 2006 Mitja and Viki got the stamp on their relationship, but with just one goal in mind; to prove that registration by far doesn't mean that gay and straight couples get the same treatment through registration and marriage respectively. They decided to ask the Constitutional Court to pass judgmenet on the "same-sex registrations", especially in the part that deals with inheritance. And the news saw the light of day today: judges of Slovene Constitutional Court unanimously decided: inheritance pats of same-sex registration bill are opposed to Slovene Constitution and our parliament has to correct the annomaly in six months. And until it does, "normal" inheritance rules (used for married couples) are to be used.

I prepared Mitja's statement for our news today.  He said that Constitutuonal Court pulled a historical move today. I couldn't agree more.

I am happy today. Mitja and Viki, thanks!

I had missed your entry about the attack.

And a big well done to Mitja and Viki (and to the Constitutional Court as well).

They truly are heros, aren't they? Did the court use the M word (marriage)?

Not directly, but they where comparing the rights that go with Registration and Marriage a couple of times, so, it's getting there. In a way.

And they are really heroes.

Thats awesome! Don't get complacent though - while we have Civil Partnerships in the UK, which are currently functionally equivalent to marriage, it wouldn't take much for laws 'encouraging marriage' to be introduced which would make CPs second class.

Oh, believe me, I am being realistic about that, especially knowing how majority of Slovene population feels about it all. But it's a step in the right direction. :)

So you have a pride flag icon now? :)

Where are Mitja and Viki hiding, I miss them here on LJ! I was just thinking of emailing Mitja to ask him how he is now. I was so pissed off myself when I learned about the attack on him (and I read about it at 2 AM on Saturday) that I would rush to the nearest Pride Parade (in Sofia) that same day if I only had the money for the travel and all. Just imagine the "joy" of my trying to post about it in English in my own journal at that time of the night/morning with my tears blurring my view of my screen and my hands trembling. And I know that such things happen here in Bulgaria too.

Our activists lost the struggle for even that kind of "registration" earlier in the year because our MPs were idiots who would rather listen to a "traditional values" NGO that is obviously a local subdivision of some American religious sect, and I don't expect the newly elected Parliament to be any better (the party bgoberon and I voted for didn't make it into Parliament). The registration thing was even denied to hetero couples, mind you, because we are oh-so-moral in Bulgaria.

Tell Mitja and Viki that I'm very proud of them... well, I'll email Mitja anyway.

God, what am I turning into? A heterosexual wannabe gay-rights activist, this goes against all traditional values, LOL.

Mitja and Viki have been neglecting LJ, but I am in touch with them. And they are in Italy now. Celebrating. :)
