Yes, another lovely weekend with Mother Nature showing us its most splendid garnment. Spring is most definitely the most beautiful time of the year in Slovenia and I am really enjoying it. We're spending the day at Igor's parents place; it's his father's birthday and we're having a BBQ/picnic day. And today smile (only 6 more left YAY!!!!!!!!! I think you won't be able to see another picture of me on my LJ for quite some time after I finish that "project") was taken during a walk Igor and I did (Let's wander slowly) through the fields. Lovely day, indeed. And today's smile is as close my smile can get to a smile when someone else is holding the cam. Well, that's how it is.

And now another, a bit darker note. We went to see Iron Man last night and I said I could had easily survived without having seen that movie. And that still stands. I really cannot say anything bad about the way the movie's done. I mean its visual effects are stunning, technically it's an A+ thing. But the more I was thinking about the story, the more pissed off I got. It's interesting to see what political tone American cartoon heroes are trying to input in the story. All these heroes eventually make it to the silver screen and the screenplay just adds some extra of that tone - and it's been going on for quite a while now, and the line stretches back to Flash Gordon through all A, B, C...X, Spider and Super and Invisible Men, through Hulk and Hellboy and all.
And the idea behind Iron Man really annoyed me. Poorly done (screenplay-wise) catharsis of the main character just isn't enough as a confession or a revelation or mea culpa of all the terror American industry of war and death bringing peace to the world has done - I can also say - in the last eight years. It just isn't enough. Even if it's election year.
And given the topic I don't really expect much of commenting on that one, but Iron Man really, really pissed me off.

And HAPPY BIRTHDAY, badrobot68! :)

Oooh! Tell me more, I'm interested! What is the political tone American cartoon heroes are trying to input in the story?

I'm not at all interested in seeing this one, and I'm not previously familiar with the story, but there have been other superhero movies I've been enamored with, and I find it fascinating how some of them really reflect "American idealism," itd. But it's been so long since I've been outside of this culture that it all seems normal to me currently. What is it you saw? Expound, if you could please.

In my small circle of acquaintances I've only heard one criticism of the movie so far, and that was to lament at the apparent inequality in the gender roles, the misogyny that comic book movies perpetrate on women STILL. So far no one has said anything about the film's politics, so I'd love another perspective!

Also, enjoy your weekend!

Well.... the shortest version, and I don't want to spoil it to anyone, is: big time genius who is all in producing and selling the lethal weapon in the world, by accident and coincidence, realises that innocent people and - can you imagine - American soldiers also get killed by his weapon. And then - in a dark cave in Afganistan mountains - his eyes get opened. And he turns himself into a super-armoured hero, who decides to bring good to the world. Again. By killing the bad guys. Again.
What annoyed me was the fact that in time when American politics is deciding what to do with a totally disastrous mission in Iraq, a big weapon guy get a selfconscience trip and decides he might be somehow humanitarian. Of course, what else, if not by more killing and even more violence against the evil - that he created.
I don't know if this all makes sense, but I really didn't like it. Really.

It is one of my most favorite movies. But that being said, I am so interested in hearing that you didn't care for it for what of course are very logical and understandable reasons. I appreciate your point of view and helping me to see a different aspect that was lost on me until now.

It was funny. I was really "fighting" with the idea about (not)putting my thoughts about Iron Man on my LJ, since I read nothing but enthusiastic posts about it. And as I said - Iron Man as an action movie stands firmly, but I found the idea of sprinkling with ashes really off putting.

And have a nice Saturday, ok? :)

I read it as a veiled criticism of Americans in Afghanistan... Remember, Americans armed the Taliban to fight the Russians... then when it was no longer convenient (and we had our epiphany - just like the hero), we (americans, alas, I am one of them in many ways) went back in to get rid of the evil we created... making an even bigger mess of it, so the solution is nowhere in sight... I didn't think it was literal, it seemed tongue-in-cheek irony at the 'vision' of Americans as wielders of peace (by wreaking havoc and destruction)... Pax Americana has been "Bellum Americanum" more than anything else... And the irony of it all is that the hero no longer has a 'real' heart, it's a mechanical tool... that tells you how tongue in cheek it is! :-)

Well..... that's another way to look at the story and I need to say it's way more appealing than my bitter-as-gall point of view of it all. I would love to think that Iron Man was done as an ironical exercise about "bringing peace with guns", but are you really sure that a summer (supposed) blockbuster is to be done like that?

Oh dear. I feel kind of bad about my ecstatic reccomendation of it! I suppose that you would have seen it anyway. Also, everyone can' like it and it's kind of refreshing to hear another point of view. I shall have to reread your post later and ponder it.

Naaaaaaaaah, I don't blame you Billy, guess my mood and the atmosphere of the movie just didn't click. While reading some comments to my grumbling I am slowly learning that there might be some other nuances to the story. But it still didn't get me all WOW! :) I'll survive.

Ah yes, I do believe that you're the link 'tween me and Tomaz. One day, there he was on my LJ commenting "Why are you so handsome William?" :P He's turned out to be a fascinating addition to my flist. I've also picked up a gay Scotsman recently-and I think that's 'cause of you too.

Accepted :)

No, seriously, Pete, it's just the politics I find so dirty sometimes, the US and the people there and all are still "something" I find extremely fascinating. And I intend to keep it that way. :)

Well, I'm not a fan of all the "rah-rah" jingoism; and as for politics, I'm tired of that too...
