Weekend #1. Controversy.

Yes, when you try to look at it as at any "normal" city, it's really hard to see any special charms. It's painfully crowded, it's loud, it can be extremely hot in summer and annoyingly humid and foggy and cold when the sun escapes. It can be flooded with smelly, murky brown water; well, some kind of smell is present most of the time. Its tiny, narrow, dark streets can leave you grasping for air and freedom and everybody charges way too much for what they are offering.

But... this is no normal city we're talking about. It's La Serenissima, Venice, Venezia, Venesia, Benetke, Venedig, Venetië, Venis, Venecija... A city apparently so important that its name seems to be translated in almost every language. A city I really love.

So, let me take you with me. Yesterday... was just the right day for a short trip to this marvel.

Venice_000
Quiet...

Venice_006
Going there. Weather to the west was apparently getting worse.

Venice_025
Our first stop was Chioggia, an island further more to the west. They call it The Little Venice. Well, in my book, no, not really. :)

Venice_032
Iggy and Robert still on Chioggia. Well, this at least looks like Venice.

Venice_040
This is... the real Venice.

Venice_064
Oh, it's me.

Venice_068
Taking it easy.

Venice_078
No extra comment, actually.

Venice_096
...

Venice_102
History.

Venice_130
This is surely one big boat.

Venice_142
The road to Lido.

Venice_150
Lido.

Venice_192
Santa Maria della Salute along Canal Grande on the vaporetto back to the car.

Venice_213
Rialto, probably one of the most famous bridges. At all. :)

Venice_218
Controversial new bridge that connects railway station and Piazzale Roma. But a major shortcut.

Venice_220
My relationship with Venice.

Wonderful pictures, as always!

I hope that Adrian doesn't see them or he'll be pining for Venice again (we've been 5 or 6 times already!) LOL!

You've heard me lament how foolish we were to have spent such a short time in Ljubljana; truth was I was in a rush to get to Venice. I had dreamed of seeing the city since I was a small boy and I was not disappointed.

We spent 3 days combing Venice and I was thoroughly enchanted. Lido was our home base while we visited and I hope someday to see both Venice and Ljubljana again. They were both magic. *sigh*

Venice is a definitely a magic place. Have you ventured to outskirts of the Lagoon, to Burano and Torcello?

My first impulse was to say no, only to Lido & Murano; however, on second thought let me say, "not yet."

Am I the only one who doesn't have a craving for Venice? :)

Love the trattoria photo (and wow, those plants in front of it are still green! :) )

I guess I'm just not the kind of person who is drawn to places... which is just as well, with my life standard. It's not that I'm indifferent to my environment (that's why I love my home town and hate Sofia), but I don't specially want to go to places for their own sake.

Ljubljana is one of my few exceptions... I guess I would feel drawn to it even if you didn't live there.

Ship was immense and I was also wondering the same thing. Water never seemed that deep to me. But apparently, I was wrong.

Venice, 1986. Backpacking with some high school chums after we've graduated from college uni. Beautiful city that smelled like rancid garbage in the July heat.

We busted loose and ordered some table red, which was delivered in a blank labelled bottle. Exactly of the sort that was implicated in a wine spiking/poisoning scandal a few weeks earlier. Meh: we'd already decided Chernobyl and the Achille Lauro weren't gonna keep us away from Europe.

Wonderful city; no inclination to go back: my Italy is more Florence or Milan than Venice or Rome. And certainly not Brindisi.

Funny... Florence was the city I loved the least when we were in Tuscany and Milano.... well, apart from the cathedral. Is there anything else there?

I feel in love with Rome though. And I am an eternal fan of Venice. :)

I have visited Venice twice now and each time it was perfect. Not too crowded, smelly or expensive. We were content to wander the small alley-ways and cross the hidden squares behind the Grand canal. I loved it. Perhaps we were just lucky.
The new bridge looks kinda sexy.

Oh, we go to Venice often, so I have seen the city in all its moods and all. And loved it always. Nothing can keep me away from La Serenissima. :)

The bridge is really amazing.

As you know, we SO MUCH want to visit Venice. It has been many years since I was there and some of it is now a distant fading memory. Hope that memory can be revived with you guys when we visit. Until then, Thanks for the pics Tomaz.

HUGS!
