So John aka jawnbcaka Dr. E. is on a business trip that will eventually take him to Greece. If I got him right, he started in Budapest, Hungary then off to Zagreb, Croatia and Belgrade, Serbia and then Athens... I nice short exploring of this part of Europe. And since Zagreb is a mere 120 kms away from Ljubljana and since he is one of my "oldest" pals in the WWWorld and since he is a person very dear to me (although he might not know it) and since he is a man that made my LJ come true... I was more than happy to have the chance to see him again and really glad he told Slovenian LJ people he's going to be in Zagreb. Mitja mitjablazicand Viki vksihave also been sharing a LJ world with John for a while and today was a great chance for them to meet in person. I think it all just clicked.

The cast performed as expected. Iggy was kind, Mitja and John were fireworks of conversation, Viki and me were just the usual bitches. Our Saturday could hardly be any better. :)

Oh, some short history... My LJ story started HERE and jawnbc in Slovenia is HERE. :)

mitjablazic, vksi, jawnbc, paterson_si.

Am I the only one who thinks Iggy and John look alike? A little? :)

So happy for jawnbc! He got the most coveted photo opportunity in Europe - one I hope to replicate one of these days... :-)

The best time in Slovenia... Late April, May, June... September... Well, when I come to think of it, you should probably try to avoid November and February, although November 2009 seems to avoid its usual dark, gloomy, foggy, depressing side.

And NO LJer I know can avoid me in Slovenia. And in Croatia and some parts of Italy and Austria. :)

I thought you said Slovenia wasn't particularly homophobic?

I said hi to Mitja and Viki. You have nice friends :-) Or, so it seems.

I'm struck by how particularly affectionate you all are (at least in print). It's a stark contrast with more guarded and cynical Americans. I like that.

I could be wrong. But I like the impression I get :-)

Re: I thought you said Slovenia wasn't particularly homophobic?
Well, my environment isn't homophobic. :) I need to read that article. The webpage won't open now.

Affectionate part... well, I guess it is our Slavic soul and upbringing that wasn't that carrer orinented. :)

Well, let me comment a little bit the situation in Slovenia.

We have 25 years of organised LGBT movement (from 1984), and we did it step by step ... from decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1977 to the Family law proposal which will introduce complete equality (mariage + adoption) in 2009. In the meantime we prohibited discrimination on the base of sexual orientation (explicitly mantioned) a few years ago (before joining EU in 2004) and the right wing government introduced the Registered partnership law which gave us some rights and for which Viki and me appealed at the constitutional cour claiming that the law was unconstitutional. And the constitutional cour deliberated in our favour.
We have 5 well functioning LGBTIQ NGO, 10 years of pride parades and 25 years of LGBT film festival (the oltest in Eastern Europe).

But unfortunatelly 4 years of right wing govenrment and it's silent support of nationalism, hate speech, violence and growing neofashism + the global financial crisis are provoking the growth of homophobia. And we are working hard on that!

Well Italy... is the founding member of European Union in 1951. But they do not have even the civil partnership for heterosexual couples, and every try of passing a law regulating the same sex partnership (PAX, DICO ...) failed till this year. I have some friends in Italy and they all agree Italy is decades behind Slovenia regarding same sex partnership. Unfortunately.... but they are working hard on that!

Let me remind you... if we pass the Family law, we'll have marriage + adoption... like in Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway ... from this point of view, we're quite emancipated.

chiming in to say hello
I am not an activist but a selfish gay who wants the rights he's entitled to as an American citizen. But that does not stop me from admiring the courage and character you and your other 1/2 have displayed in your own fight and victory for what you feel is yours.

It is a pleasure to know that you exist. It would be a greater pleasure to make friends, should you be so inclined.

I have some friends in Italy and they all agree Italy is decades behind Slovenia regarding same sex partnership. Unfortunately.... but they are working hard on that! - Italy is a very complex if not complicated country when it comes to gay (I prefer this word to "homosexuality" because "gay" is a total state of being beyond sex). In Italy, there is the Catholic church which is a huge factor we cannot deny. Slovenia does not have this religious burden, according to Tomaz. So, the 2 countries are not exactly compatible re: gay.

Is that a fair assessment?

In the 80's, I had an opportunity to live in Italy for nearly 4 years. I had friends and a love affair there (but that's for another conversation). So, I can safely say that I understand both dilemma and strength re: "gay" in Italy.

This said, in Italy Gay Pride is not suppressed or discouraged like in many countries in Central and Eastern Europe, and there are more than 500 people who show up for the Pride Parades in several cities.

But the more reason, then, to admire the courage demonstrated by Slovenian LGBTs? You have my respect.

Let me remind you... if we pass the Family law, we'll have marriage + adoption... like in Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway ... from this point of view, we're quite emancipated. - I sincerely wish you all the best of luck! One more country in the world where social emancipation is welcome is another triumph for humanity.

We are still fighting tooth and nail for ourselves here in the US, as I'm sure you know.

Cheers!

It was me... writing the previous comment.

I'd like of course to have many more activist fighting for our essential human rights and equality in the first rows ... but I think there are several types of approaches ... and if we on one hand need let's call it macro activism, with people fighting in the first rows, in the media, lobbying in the parliament, working in NGO's, working on campaigns, pride parades ... we also need micro activism, people who are openly gay in their environment, at home, in the family, at the workplaces, living their lives freely and proudly... they are at least so important as the other type of activists.

So I prefer to give to every individual the choice how she/he will contribute to change our society ... I will of course them to live as free as possible, to participate to the community events, to come in the first roads and fight ... but at the end, the choice is very very individual.

Let me add just a thing, just to stick to the facts...

... the 25th June attack was directed to one of our places, the Cafe Open, where the LGBT literature evening was taking place ... It was not pointed to me, but unfortunately I was smoking on the door and they attacked me... I was a kind of collateral damage ... ;-) The heavy police protection of the pride came after the attack ;-)

But I've got the point of your writing... is encouraging people to take action, to take responsibility, to contribute ... and I'm fine whit that!
