Now this...

Some of you might remeber my rambling about überspielt car design. Toyota Land Cruiser was also one of the no-no start of the post. I did my usual car-checking today and look what hit my eyes. This is probably a clear entry for TheUgliestDumbAssDesign competition of 2009.

I am at loss of words. See?

I'd agree with you. This one's pretty bad.

I'd like to offer nearly anything I've seen made by Ssangyong as a candidate in the TheUgliestDumbAssDesign competition. We don't have Ssangyongs available to us here in the US (fortunately...)

I checked Toyota's Slovenian website. I thought this model was something like the SUV we have here in the US called the 4Runner. It doesn't appear to have any commonality with that vehicle in spite of my first impressions. Your V8 Land Cruiser is the same one we get here (although you probably can get a diesel which of course we don't...)

While trying to navigate that Slovene website (by clicking on pictures, lol...) I would also like to nominate another Toyota I saw there, the AYGO. That was pretty god-awful as well. The iQ isn't quite to my taste either, but I understand it may come to the US as a competitor for the SMART car.

Hehehehehe I nominated all Ssangyongs last year I guess. They are buttfuckingassugly. No, Land Cruiser you are seeing here, also gets a V8, so I guess they just managed to ruin one more car. That was already pretty ugly, to tell the truth. Aygo is a pretty... awkward piece, too. It's a joint venture between Toyota and PSA Group (Citroen/Peugeot) and they have their own products, Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107. Well....... :)

iQ is... different, although it looks ugly to me. Out of proportions. But apparently the little car drives like a big one. Unlike Smart.

I admit to liking the Aygo/C1/107 trio somewhat. Given the design constraints (shared platform, tiny, fuel efficient, low-ish price) they managed reasonably. I'd drive one in the city, if I couldn't have a late 60's Midget...

Hey, T. I just realised that the post you referenced was the one where I first found you and first commented! :)

I did check out the Aygo/C1/107 triplets. I was surprised at how un-different they are from one another. It almost appeared as though the Peugeot and Citroen only differ in the insert in the grill openings. In the US, lack of differentiation between competing models led to the elimination of the Plymouth, Oldsmobile and soon, Pontiac, nameplates from their corporate big overlords.

I can't see how these three would compete successfully in markets where they're all available. In the US, the Toyota would have an advantage due to the superior quality/relibility perceptions the marque has here in North America.

Is that the case elsewhere?

Yes, we were attracted by cars. :)

Toyota in Europe/Slovenia... Well, it is appreciated because of it's quality, but I guess people see cars differently in Europe so Toyota's are not making any considerable numbers here because of "oh my car is so boring I will asleep" factor. Just because they are boring.

heh..

John, I finally figured that out! I'm not so smart sometimes, I guess! Durrrrrr...

Maybe I'll warm up to the Aygo and kin.

107 is the cutest because it bears most of original family clues. I think. :)

Oh, poor, naive, little Tomaz. You haven't seen UGLY until you've seen the North American Ford Flex. It's mix of SUV and Hearse.

I just puked in my mouth a little. But Flex at least has the same (rotten) design language. This lame Toyota is just a mixture of godknowswhats.

They are in an Economic Crisis. They just took spare parts left over from other vehicles and mashed this one together. They are being efficient and non-wasteful. ;-)

I say you march right over to your local Range Rover dealer and kick him in the shins, yelling "THAT is for the latest Land Cruiser!! WTF!?!"

I am sure you have shit-kicker shoes.

They didn't have their eyes closed; rather, they were firmly rooted in the 60's, when Ford's wagons (estates, w.h.y. for naming) were some of the most popular vehicles in North America, at least for families...

The Flex design was introduced at shows as the Fairlane concept (http://trucks.about.com/od/conceptcars/ss/fordfairlane.htm) and yes, it's ugly as hell, but then so is every modern Ford, really.

Modern Ford cars in Europe are nice and even beautiful. Fiesta, Mondeo, Kuga and upcoming C-Max are really nicely styled cars.

Eh... I think all suv's are overpriced ugly-ass gas guzzlers as it is. So this really isn't too much of an ugly surprise to me. :) Just typical.

I totally agree with you on price/gas part. But some of them don't make me scream when I see them.

This one did.

Hmmm...there are a few Hybrid and Zero Emission *tee hee...I said emission* SUVs out there.

Don't go condemning them all, Mister. ;-)

It's obviously designed for North America.

I thought so too. When I first saw this, i thought it was similar to the North American Toyota 4Runner/Lexus GX. I looked carefully between them and this version of the Land Cruiser and couldn't find any commonality...
I don't think this is a model bound for North America.

Looks like I'm wrong. This may well be our next Lexus GX.
Lesson: I should do more research before commenting, lol...

I hate all SUVs with a firey passion. If you don't own a farm and drive a landrover or jeep you have no business driving something like that.

I don't hate them. They serve no purpose, they guzzle gas and many other downsides, but some at least don't look that terribly outrageously ugly. :)

Yes, Land Cruisers used to have some off-road flair. Now they look like.... well... shit.

Maybe they want to be exclusive. Like... nobody buys them anymore. :)
