Crossover Tops'n'Flops. And some Boobs.

Ok, first part of the post is for some of the car freaks. Two cars that attracted my attention in the past few weeks. The first one, definitely in Tops class, is Škoda Yeti, neat little industrial so called SUV. Its design is telling exactly what it should for this class of cars. On the other side, BMW 5 GT, really doesn't know what its message. A mixture of coupe, hatchback, van, limousine, trailer? Definitely the Flop of the car season 2009/2010. No doubt it will sell well though. Money and Chic very often don't go together well.

And for not that tin can challenged part of my flist. French and Saunders. I am almost certains I've posted this before, but still....

I think I need new spectacles... *wink*

Yes, I can't really know what is BMW design team trying to tell. I mean, BMW is a premiur brand, but still not that premium that they could afford avant-garde design. Which it isn't.

It's not even "coupe". It looks like a whale to me. Or like some mid 90's Nissan hatchback they sold here.

Yeti looks okay, yes. :)

First...... GOOD TO SEE YOU AGAIN, Dave!!!!!

BMW seems to have tough times defining their design priorities. I wouldn't mind seeing a large coupe/hatchback/limo combination of it only looked good. A great example of that new species will be out soon. Audi A7. Breathtaking.

Bauhaus sometimes comes to mind when I see some clear executions of Audi design. Not the latest version of Q7 though. Bloody baroque! :)

I think many here share the same thoughts.
The 5GT is abominable. Again, what's the point, other than trying to fill every perceived or imagined niche market BMW can seem to conjure up? The 5 Estate is much better. The X6 is even uglier if such a thing is imaginable...and further begs the question of what is this car for? Other than height, they appear to the untrained eye almost indistinguishable from the other.
I used to admire BMW...a 3 series was one of my aspirations. Now, I'm not sure as BMW (IMHO) seeks more to fill the needs of the status-obsessed as opposed to those who truly appreciate driving excellence.

<> sorry about all that...

I do like the Yeti. Is it based on a VW Lupo or Polo platform? It is very appealing and a derivation of it might do well here...

Yes... The Yeti is on the Skoda Fabia platform, shared by the previous version of the Seat Ibiza and the VW Polo.
Actually most VAG cars are about the same, which is a good thing.

I didn't like the Yeti when I saw it live, though. But the BMW is an utter piece of crap in terms of looks

An unfortunate name of the car. The less sporty version is called "Roomster"

Egads!!! I just googled the Roomster!!!

How can it be related to the Yeti?!? It's positively frightful!
Worse than the BMW! Talk about ugly! (at least to me....)

What were they thinking?

I'd seen the Avantime (or was it the VelSatis?) a while back on Top Gear.
I give it a pass just because it's....French :)

I think that the general idea of the car is good but the execution is meh.

The Yeti does look better, but it's a pampered Roomster.

I think that Skoda has currently the best two sedans in Europe, the Octavia and the Superb. Think about 30% cheaper Passats with the same quality. All taxis here are those two models and they're very satisfied with them.

If I was to replace my Civic it would probably with an Octavia RS (probably the tourer) as the Accord is meh and the new Civic is a bit marmite (and I find they feel big to drive, but with a cramped cabin). A wolf in reps clothing is the Octavia RS...

You can even get that with the 170hp TDI engines, with more torque than most gas V6 available in the US

YAY for Octavia RS! :)

I took a look at the website - *big* mistake, I'm now lusting after the Limited Edition Graphite Octavia VRS... I don't need a new car as I have nowhere to drive it!

The thing is that I'm not a fan of "SUV-wannabes". But it's a matter of tastes. I simply don't like the desing, not that it's bad

I don't like "SUV-wannabes" either, in fact, I don't like SUV stuff in general. But I do like Yeti design. It's reasonably clean and to the point. Because most of the time I don't know where is this SUV design going... Overly designed baroque cars like some Nissan, Toyota and Mercedes products really don't make much sense to me. Does every single tiny line really have to have some sort of a statement? Design process behind Yeti is very close to Land Rover philosophy in my book. Simple and it should mean business.

I agree with the analysis you make and for that, Skoda designers got it right (compare it to the Roomster, which is 95% the same car).
I still don't like it!

Here in the US, there are very few small, affordable minivans or compact wagons (estates to you?)
A number of years ago, I had a SUV-wannabe, a Subaru Forester, as there simply wasn't any other affordable choices. We do have the Jetta wagon (Golf Variant to you?) in very limited quantities, likewise the Subaru Impreza. Other than that, if you want a useful car of that type, you're pretty much stuck with an Forester, CRV, RAV or Escape here in the USA. Things get much bigger, thirstier and more expensive quickly after that.
I look at some of the small Asian and European wagons and hope....

5 GT... doesn't even look tad sporty, like Bimmer should. Not to mention odd proportions - way too high for my taste. And I agree with you - driving experience seems to be giving the space to "status". Odd design isn't really that much of a status for me...

And, yes, Yeti is built on little VW platform.
